THE EXPRESSION OF LOCAL IDENTITY IN THE TRADITIONAL BALINESE ARCHITECTURE OF VERNACULAR HOUSES AT PENGLIPURAN VILLAGE

Balinese traditional house architecture functions not only as a dwelling but also as a representation of cultural identity, reflected through building forms, architectural elements, materials, and spatial proportions imbued with philosophical meaning. This study aims to identify and analyze the manifestation of local identity in Balinese traditional architecture as specifically embodied in the building elements of traditional houses, rather than merely in village spatial layouts. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through field observations, interviews, and literature review. The analysis focuses on the characteristics of traditional house buildings, including form, vertical proportions, composition of architectural elements, and the use of traditional materials, referring to the philosophical concepts of Tri Hita Karana and Tri Angga, as well as the technical guidelines of Asta Kosala Kosali. The results indicate that the local identity of traditional houses in Penglipuran is reflected in building forms, the head–body–foot structural division, the use of natural materials such as bamboo and stone, and the arrangement of architectural elements such as angkul-angkul, merajan, aling-aling, and bale sakenem, each of which carries symbolic meaning.
