Abstract

Traditional Balinese architecture represents an important cultural heritage of Indonesia, characterized by rich symbolic and philosophical values expressed through ornamental elements that shape spatial and architectural identity. However, these ornaments are often understood merely as visual decorations, creating a need for deeper studies to reveal the cultural meanings embedded within them. This study aims to examine the symbolic meanings of ornamental elements in traditional residential architecture in Penglipuran Village, Bali. In Balinese traditional architecture, ornaments function not only as aesthetic features but also convey philosophical, mythological, and religious values that reflect the cultural identity of the local community. Penglipuran Village is recognized as a traditional village that consistently preserves Balinese architectural principles based on the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes harmony between humans and God (parhyangan), humans and fellow humans (pawongan), and humans and nature (palemahan). These principles are reflected in the spatial organization and placement of ornaments that follow cosmological structures and religious symbolism. The preservation of traditional motifs and the use of local materials such as wood and sandstone demonstrate efforts to maintain architectural authenticity while strengthening cultural identity. This research employs a descriptive-comparative approach through field observations, surveys, in-depth interviews, and literature studies to analyze the relationship between form, function, and meaning of ornamental elements. The findings indicate that ornamental elements serve as a medium for expressing spiritual values and local wisdom that support cultural sustainability and reinforce the concept of balance in the daily life of the Penglipuran community.
