TYPOLOGICAL STUDY OF SANTIAGO CALATRAVA’S TRANSPORTATION BUILDINGS

Transportation buildings not only function as a means of mobility, but can also shape visual images, regional identities, and public space experiences. Santiago Calatrava Valls is one of the architects who has produced many transportations works with strong characters through the relationship between form, structure, technology, and the meaning of movement. This study aims to develop the typological tendencies of Santiago Calatrava Valls' transportation buildings through five case studies, namely the Alamillo Bridge, Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport Train Station, Bohl Bus and Tram Stop, Sondica Airport, and the WTC Transportation Hub. The method used is descriptive-qualitative with a comparative case study approach. The analysis is carried out based on six aspects, namely function, visual analogy, structure, technology, use of space, and the meaning of the work. The results of the study show that Calatrava's transportation works have typological tendencies in the form of dominant structural expressions, dynamic forms, analogies of movement, and the use of technology to form the iconic image of the building. The structure not only plays a role as a construction system but also becomes a visual element that shapes the mass, space, and the user's movement experience.
