IDENTIFICATION OF DECORATIVE ORNAMENTS ON THE EXTERIOR OF TRADITIONAL BALINESE HOUSES IN TENGANAN VILLAGE

Traditional Balinese decorative art represents spiritual, symbolic, and social values that reflect the balance between humans, nature, and belief systems. The application of ornaments in traditional architecture not only serves as an aesthetic element but also conveys cultural and philosophical meanings. This study aims to identify the forms, motifs, and symbolic meanings of decorative ornaments on the exterior of traditional houses in Tenganan Village, Bali, which are characterized by the simple and geometric architecture of the Bali Aga community. The research was conducted through field observation and literature review to examine the application of decorative ornaments on the front, rear, and side facades of traditional houses. The results show that on the front facade, geometric ornaments symbolize protection and balance; on the rear facade, simpler decorations emphasize harmony with nature; and on the side facade, stylized geometric and floral-faunal motifs represent the harmony between the physical (sekala) and spiritual (niskala) realms. These findings highlight that the decorative elements in Tenganan serve not only an aesthetic purpose but also express the spiritual, social, and cosmological.
