Overcrowding at the Class IIA Women’s Prison in Bandung has negatively affected the psychological condition of inmates, as indicated by increased feelings of loneliness. This condition may lower the level of flourishing, an optimal state of well-being encompassing positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. This study aims to examine the effect of loneliness on flourishing and to test the mediating role of gratitude among female inmates. A total of 201 participants were selected through purposive sampling. This research employed a quantitative approach using multiple regression analysis and the Sobel mediation test. The instruments used include the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6), the Indonesian version of the Gratitude Scale, and the PERMA-Profiler. The results showed that loneliness had a significant negative effect on flourishing (β = -1.250, p = 0.003), while gratitude had a significant positive effect (β = 0.353, p < 0.000). Gratitude was found to partially mediate the relationship between loneliness and flourishing, with an indirect effect of -0.798 (p < 0.001), These findings highlight the crucial role of gratitude in reducing the negative impact of loneliness on inmate flourishing.
