Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) posits three innate psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness as universal across humans. This claim continues to be tested cross-culturally, yet it rarely reaches specific, within a single country. This issue of Mind Set brings together seven articles that, without being designed to do so, contribute relevant evidence to this ongoing debate. Relatedness is explored through self-compassion and loneliness among emerging adults, the construction of an Indonesian nature connectedness scale, and a re-examination of the factor structure of the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Tensions between needs emerge in studies on gratitude, loneliness, and flourishing among female inmates, as well as peer conformity among junior high school students. Competence appears through the intergenerational transmission of parenting self-efficacy and the role of self-esteem and emotional intelligence in Generation Z's career decision-making. Although most studies rely on non-probability samples, warranting cautious interpretation of representativeness, these seven studies affirm that SDT's universality claim requires continued testing among understudied populations.
